Treatment of Flexural Psoriasis
What is Flexural Psoriasis?
Flexural psoriasis is psoriasis which commonly occurs where the skin flexes, hence the name flexural. Flexural psoriasis usually occurs in about 2% to 6% of those with psoriasis. Flexural psoriasis is seen as smooth inflamed areas or patches in the armpits, under the breast, in the skin folds of the groin, buttocks, and genitals. It is more common in overweight people who have more folds of skin, which may overlap, or crease. Inverse psoriasis is often misdiagnosed because of its resemblance to yeast infection such as Candida.
Flexural psoriasis is unique in that there is no scaling rather just bright red or pink patches that may be itchy. Perspiration or contact friction from clothing may cause increased irritation, which can be painful at times. Should the patch of affected skin can crack and bleed causing an increased risk of infection.
Most psoriasis is marked by areas of dry, rough scaly skin, flexural psoriasis has little to no scaling. Because of its location in the folds of the skin it tends to be moist, very sore, and can be more uncomfortable physically than the dryer versions of psoriasis.
Flexural psoriasis sufferers are in their middle years or older. Those who are overweight or have more folds of skin are more susceptible to Flexural Psoriasis. Anyone with severe irritation and redness in the genital area could have inverse psoriasis - even if they have never been diagnosed with psoriasis.
Cause of Flexural Psoriasis
Flexural psoriasis is thought to occur as a result of a yeast over growth, as well as high sensitivity to friction and perspiration. When flexural psoriasis occurs in the groin area, it can be very uncomfortable and embarrassing. Too much scratching can worsen it and cause extreme inflammation. Scratching, friction and sweating, harsh soaps and skin care products, and stress of all sorts can result in a worsening of the symptoms of flexural psoriasis. The affected areas are susceptible to over growth of bacteria and fungal infections.
Treating Flexural Psoriasis
Treatment of flexural psoriasis is more challenging due to the more sensitive areas of the body. The all-natural mineral salts in Psoriasis-Ltd delivers many well-known and well-documented beneficial minerals directly to the skin in a soothing application without the side effects that accompany many psoriasis treatments. Psoriasis-Ltd contains no irritating fragrances, which can result in further irritation in these sensitive areas. Because the flexural prone areas of the skin are prone to fungal and yeast infections they can be difficult to treat. Due to this problem, doctors may dilute the treatments by including antifungal or anti-yeast agents. Perspiration and friction, difficult to avoid in the flexure areas, only make the condition worse.
Other natural methods of treating Flexural Psoriasis may include applying cornstarch to the affected area to keep it dryer. Avoiding friction with belts if the psoriasis appears under the waist band of clothing. Certain fabrics can also cause additional irritation such as polyester blends and wool. The dye used in darker clothing may be a source of additional irritation.
