Treatment of ear psoriasis involves avoidance of the cause of irritation. Silicon hearing aids, which are hypoallergenic, may be substituted in the case of a hearing aid allergy. Using stainless steel earrings until the earring tract has healed adequately may prevent an allergic reaction to earrings.
Removal of the blockage and topical medications are typically used to control psoriasis scales in the ear. The eardrum is easily damaged. It is best to avoid picking and scratching the affected areas of the ear. Careful cleansing of the ear area can be done using over-the-counter ear-cleaning kits that involve squirting small amounts of fluid into the ear and letting it drain. Plain warm water, followed by a thin layer of jojoba oil applied with a cotton swab may also be effective.
What is Ear Psoriasis
Psoriasis in the ears can cause scale buildup that blocks the ear canal. The dry scales in the ear combined with normal earwax, can sometimes produce the physical blockage of the external ear canal leading to a temporary decrease in hearing. Approximately 18 percent of patients with psoriasis experience ear involvement, which may include the outer ear and inner ear.
Psoriasis generally occurs in the external ear canal, not inside the ear or behind the eardrum. It also occurs behind the ear so this area has to be checked to look for the plaques if the diagnosis of psoriasis is considered. Dryness of the skin in the ear, with some scaling is characteristic of psoriasis.
Cause of Ear Psoriasis
The causes of ear psoriasis may result from an infection, trauma, or an immune system triggered response.
Infections resulting from an immune triggered response include but are not limited to the ingredients in hair products, cosmetics, earrings, hearing aids, topical medications, and cell phones. Ingredients often found in shampoos, hair dyes, and hair sprays include paraphenylenediamine, parabens, and quaternium-15 may trigger an allergic reaction. Hearing aids made of rubber, vinyl plastics, or methylmethacrylates or chemicals used to clean hearing aids are common triggers of ear psoriasis. Topical medications including neomycin, tobramycin, gentamicin) or topical anesthetic agents, such as benzocaine, may also trigger an immune system response. Earrings, especially those made of nickel, cobalt, palladium, or white or yellow gold, may also trigger an allergic response. Chromium, a metal commonly used in cell phones can trigger an immune system response. For a list of additional causes of contact irritants please visit the International Eczema-Psoriasis Foundation.
Another cause of infection is excessive moisture in the ear. Otitis externa commonly known as swimmer's ear is an infection of the ear canal, the tubular opening that carries sounds from the outside of the body to the eardrum. It can be caused by many different types of bacteria or fungi. Excessive moisture can provide an ideal warm moist environment for bacteria and fungus to grow which causes inflammation of the skin which reduces hearing as well and could possibly and ear ache. In temperate climates, otitis externa occurs more often in summertime, when swimming is common. Dry skin, psoriasis, scratching the ear canal, vigorous ear cleaning with cotton-tipped applicators, or inserting foreign objects like bobby pins or paper clips into the ear can all increase the risk of developing otitis externa.
Inflammation of the of the outer ear may result from trauma such as but not limited to pressure from hearing devices, or headbands); exposure to radiation; or environmental irritants such as the chemicals used to clean hearing aids).
