This glossary defines commonly used Psoriasis terms, including products and medications used in the treatment of psoriasis and other skin conditions that co-exist with psoriasis such as acne, rosacea, eczema and dermatitis.
Bacteria: a class of microorganisms that cause infections.
Bacterial keratitis: caused by improper care and cleaning of contact lenses or wearing soft daily-wear lenses overnight, or contaminated eye makeup can also cause bacterial keratitis. Bacterial keratitis is characterized by waking up with your eyelids stuck together, eye pain, sensitivity to light, redness, tearing, and a decrease or blurriness in vision.
B cells (lymphocytes): cells that make and carry surface immunoglobulins.
Barber's Itch: Folliculitis. Damaged hair follicles become infected with bacteria, resulting in skin rashes and pimples around the infected follicles. The infection can spread.
Basal cell cancer: The vast majority (80%) of all skin cancers are basal cell cancers that affect the upper layer of skin. Symptoms include new skin growths that bleed or don't heal well. The skin lesions vary in color from white to brown, and may be flat or raised.
Bass & Boney Pharmaceuticals, Inc.: Bass & Boney Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a North Carolina Corporation, was incorporated on July 28, 1983, and ever since then, we have remained committed to our quality service and customer relations.
Biologic Therapies - Biologic medicines, made from substances found in living organisms, block aspects of the immune system that are overactive in psoriasis. Because these types of biologics suppress the immune system, they may cause a reduction in the ability to fight infections.
Blackheads: small, dark spots (about the size of a pinhead) caused by discoloration of the surface of a small plug in the opening of a follicle (pore).
Blepharitis - An inflammation of the lash follicles at the eyelid margins due to excess growth in lash follicles of bacteria normally present on the skin. Blepharitis is sometimes present in ocular rosacea and ocular psoriasis. Alternative name: eyelid inflammation.
Berlock dermatitis: symptoms typically occur in the area of the neck, face, and breast, with drop-shaped or quadrilateral patches or streaks, induced by sequential exposure to perfume or other toilet articles and then to sunlight.
Bumps - The raised area of a bump or bruise results from blood leaking from these injured blood vessels into the tissues as well as from the body's response to the injury. A purplish, flat bruise that occurs when blood leaks out into the top layers of skin is referred to as an ecchymosis.
