This glossary defines commonly used Psoriasis terms, including products and medications used in the treatment of psoriasis and other skin conditions that co-exist with psoriasis such as acne, rosacea, eczema and dermatitis.
Ichthyosis: symptoms include dry, rectangular scales on the skin. Commonly occurs in atopic dermatitis
Ilosone®: Oral antibiotic used to treat infections. Also sold under the brand name(s): Erythrocin® (Oral), Eryc®, E.E.S.®, E-Mycin®, Erythromycin® (Oral), Pediamycin®, Robimycin®
Immediate hypersensitivity: a pattern of immune reactivity that begins within minutes of exposure to an antigen. Immediate reactivity is mediated primarily by mast cells. In the skin, immediate hypersensitivity often presents as hives.
Immune system: the body’s natural defense against foreign substances and organisms that could lead to illness.
Immunologic: the signs and symptoms of reactions of immune cells or antibodies to antigens.
Immunoglobulin: an antigen-binding protein secreted by specific white cells of the immune system. Immunoglobulins are antibodies.
Immunomodulation: therapeutic manipulation of the immune system, used clinically to treat a disease
Impetigo: A bacterial infection common to children; it is highly contagious and spreads easily. It causes itchy red skin lesions that crust over.
Industrial dermatitis: contact dermatitis, usually of the allergic type, caused by material used in the patient's occupation.
Infection: the invasion of the body by microorganisms which reproduce and multiply, causing disease.
Infectious eczematoid dermatitis: a pustular eczematoid eruption frequently following or occurring coincidentally with some pyogenic process.
International Eczema-Psoriasis Foundation: The International Eczema-Psoriasis Foundation is dedicated to providing information on the types, sysptoms and treatment of the various forms of eczema, psoriasis and dermatitis. Their goal is to make the information helpful and easy to read and implement.
The International Rosacea Foundation: The International Rosacea Foundation is a non-profit organization whose primary mission is to provide information on rosacea treatments and rosacea symptoms in an easy to read format.
Interstitial keratitis: is a chronic inflammation of tissue deep within the cornea. Interstitial keratitis affects both eyes and results as a complication of congenital or acquired syphilis. Also known as parenchymatous keratitis.
Inverse psoriasis: psoriasis characterized by smooth, inflamed lesions in body folds.
Iridocyclitis: is a type of Iritis involving an inflammation of the iris.
Iritis: an inflammation of the iris, a part of the eye. Symptoms include eye pain, sensitivity to light, and/or blurry vision.
Irritant: agent that may produce inflammation if exposure is sufficient.
Irritant contact dermatitis: is often more painful than itchy, and is the result of an offending agent that actually damages the skin with which it comes into contact.
Isomorphic Phenomenon Psoriasis: term used to describe psoriatic lesions which appear at the site of injury, infection or other skin psoriasis, or may be a new lesion in an existing case. Also known as Koebner's Phenomenon Psoriasis.
Isomorphic Response Psoriasis:psoriatic lesions which appear at the site of injury, infection or other skin psoriasis, or may be a new lesion in an existing rash. Up to 50% of psoriasis patients will experience new lesions forming at the site of healing wounds. Also known as Koebner's Phenomenon Psoriasis
