This glossary defines commonly used Psoriasis terms, including products and medications used in the treatment of psoriasis and other skin conditions that co-exist with psoriasis such as acne, rosacea, eczema and dermatitis.
Ocular Psoriasis :can cause symptoms including inflammation of the eye, dryness and discomfort. When psoriasis affects the eyelids, scales may cover lashes. The edges of the eyelids may become red and crusty. If inflamed for long periods, the rims of the lids may turn up or down. If the rim turns down, lashes can rub against the eyeball and cause irritation. In a prolonged ocular episode vision impairment may occur. Ocular symptoms may occur in approximately 10% of psoriasis patients.
Oedema: swelling of the skin due to an abnormal accumulation of fluid beneath the skin. This leads to a puffy appearance often to a limb, most commonly a leg.
Ointment: A medication preparation that is applied topically to the skin. An ointment has an oil base whereas a cream is water-soluble.
Omega 3's: considered essential fatty acids, necessary for human health but the body can' t make them -- you have to get them through food. Also known as polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), omega-3 fatty acids play a crucial role in brain function, as well as normal growth and development. They may reduce the risk of heart disease.Research shows that omega-3 fatty acids also reduce inflammation and may help lower risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, and arthritis.
Onset: In medical terms, the first appearance of the signs or symptoms of an illness or condition such as, for example, the onset of psoriatic arthritis.
Oral: by the mouth.
Osteoarthritis: A type of arthritis caused by symptoms of inflammation, breakdown, and eventual loss of cartilage in the joints. Also known as degenerative arthritis.
