This glossary defines commonly used Psoriasis terms, including products and medications used in the treatment of psoriasis and other skin conditions that co-exist with psoriasis such as acne, rosacea, eczema and dermatitis.

Radiation Dermatitis: a skin disease associated with prolonged exposure to radiation. Symptoms of Radiation Dermatitis occur to some degree in most patients receiving radiotherapy, with or without chemotherapy. Radiation therapy may also lead to radiation cancer. Also known as radiodermatitis or Roentgen-ray dermatitis.

Rat-mite dermatitis : inflammation of the skin due to a bite of the rat-mite, Ornithonyssus bacoti.

Retin-A®: whose generic name is tretinoin, is a topical Vitamin A acid.

Retinoids: a synthetic derivative of Vitamin A, used in the prevention and treatment of various skin problems. These drugs have been very successful in treating the symptoms related to severe cases of ichthyosis. The two most common retinoids are Accutane (isotretinoin) and Soriatane (acetretin).

Retinol: (retinyl acetate, retinyl alcohol) is a naturally occurring form of vitamin A and is found in many fruits and vegetables with an orange, yellow, or red color. Used as a skin exfolient.

Rheumatoid arthritis: chronic disease of unknown cause and characterized by symptoms of pain, stiffness, inflammation, swelling and sometimes destruction of joints

Rhinophyma: (rye-no-feye-muh) - Nasal bumps. When rosacea is not treated, some people develop bumps on the nose. As more bumps appear, the nose looks swollen. Alternative names Bulbous nose; Nose – bulbous

Rhus dermatitis: allergic contact dermatitis caused by contact with plants such as poison ivy, poison sumac or poison oak which are members of the plant genus Toxicodendron.

Ringworm: Ring-shaped lesions or rashes appear on the skin. The lesions are itchy, and usually occur on exposed areas of the body, such as the inner arm.

Roaccutane:a medication prescribed for the treatment of severe acne. Originalyy developed as a chemotherapy medication for the treatment of brain cancer and pancreatic cancer. It is still used in the treatment of these cancers due to its ability to kill rapidly dividing cells. The effects of the treatment are systemic and non-selective. May be used to treat Harlequin type ichthyosis. A vitamin a deriviative also known as accutane.

Robimycin®: Oral antibiotic used to treat infections. Also sold under the brand name(s): Erthromycin®, Eryc®, E.E.S.®, E-Mycin®, Erythrocin® (Oral), Pediamycin®, Ilosone®

Roentgen-ray dermatitis: also called radiation dermatitis, this skin condition is associated with prolonged exposure to radiation. Some degree of radiation exposure occurs in most patients receiving treatment with radiotherapy, with or without chemotherapy. Radiation therapy can result in an increased risk of cancer.

Rosacea: Pronounced rose-ay-shah. A chronic inflammation of the cheeks, nose, chin, forehead, or eyelids; it may cause symptoms of redness, vascularity (increased prominence of the blood vessels), swelling or hyperplasia (increase in size of the tissue), or skin eruptions similar to acne. Alternative names Acne rosacea.

Rosacea-Ltd IV:Rosacea Ltd has been used by rosacea sufferers throughout the world. Rosacea Ltd can be used safely and effectively by those who are more sensitive due to ocular rosacea as well as women who are pregnant or nursing. Rosacea Ltd contains no irritating fragrances.
