Treatment of Guttate Psoriasis
What is Guttate Psoriasis?
The symptoms of Guttate psoriasis appear as small red dot-like lesions on the skin. The word guttate is derived from the Latin word gutta meaning "drop." It may be described as looking like a drop of psoriasis. Guttate is the most common type of psoriasis occurring mainly in children and young adults.
Cause of Guttate Psoriasis
Guttate psoriasis occurs when the infection-fighting white blood cells within the body called T-cells malfunction. Under normal circumstances, T-cells fight against foreign invaders. However, in individuals with psoriasis, the T-cells actually attack the skin. The rash of psoriasis results from a combination of damage to the skin by T-cells, inflammation in the skin, and overproduction of new skin cells.
Events that can trigger an attack of guttate psoriasis include: tonsillitis, a cold, chicken pox, immunizations, physical trauma, psychological stress, illness, and the administration of anti-malarial drugs.
How Common is Guttate Psoriasis?
Guttate psoriasis is a relatively uncommon form of psoriasis. Fewer than 2% of those with psoriasis have the guttate type of psoriasis. Guttate psoriasis is a condition more likely to occur in children and adults below 30 years of age. Both males and females are equally affected.
An outbreak of guttate psoriasis may be an immune reaction that is triggered by a previous streptococcal infection or some other type of infection. Guttate psoriasis is also known as Eruptive psoriasis and is considered the least severe form of psoriasis.
Where Does Guttate Psoriasis Occur?
The lesions of guttate psorisis are not as scaly as plaque-type psoriasis and are likely to be found on the trunk or legs but have been known to extend to involve the facial area. When guttate psoriasis appears on the facial areas the lesions may be confused with the papules of rosacea.
Guttate psoriasis frequently appears suddenly following a streptococcal infection or viral upper respiratory infections. There are no special tests to diagnosis Guttate psoriasis as it is easily diagnosed due to the characteristic, tear-drop shaped rash.Although it is advisable for those disgnosed with guttate psoriasis should have their throat swabbed to see if they are carriers of strep bacteria.

Guttate Psoriasis Treatment
Guttate psoriasis usually responds well to treatment and may gradually go away on its own. Many people who have an episode of guttate psoriasis may not have another one for many years.
Normally new skin cells regenerate about every thirty days. It take about a month for the new skin cells to move from the deepest skin layer where they're produced, to the surface where they die and flake off. With psoriasis, the entire skin cell life cycle is accelerated and this process is completed in only a few days. Because the body can't shed old skin as rapidly as new cells are rising to the surface, raised patches of dead skin accumulate on the skin's surface.
Throughout history psoriasis has been treated with some exotic and often toxic treatment methods. One of the earliest psoriasis treatments known to the ancient egyptians was to apply cat feces to red drop like areas of guttate psoriasis. Other historical psoriasis treatments have included but are not limited to the use of onions, a combination of sea salt and urine, a mixture containing goose oil and semen, wasp droppings in sycamore milk, and even a soup made from poisonous snakes.
