Inverse Psoriasis Treatment

The Symptoms of Inverse Psoriasis

The symptoms of Inverse psoriasis are characterized by smooth inflamed lesions in the body folds -- armpits, under the breast, skin folds of the groin, buttocks, and genitals. Inverse psoriasis is often misdiagnosed because of its resemblance to yeast infection such as Candida.

Contrary to the more common types of psoriasis, inverse psoriasis does is not characterized by scaling. Inverse psoriases, instead, is characterized by inflamed, bright red yet smooth patches of skin that may be painful and itchy.

Inverse psoriasis is particularly subject to irritation due to rubbing and sweating. Sometimes there is a crease in the center of the patch that may crack open, bleed or become infected. The rubbing together and sweating if the skin folds aggravates irritation of the affected areas.

Inverse psoriasis is often white in color, appears softened as if soaked by water, and may resemble a fungal infection. There is very little scaling, although the patches are inflamed and can be very sore. Appearing as it does in the folds of the skin, it is moister than other forms of psoriasis, and can be more uncomfortable physically. Inverse psoriasis rarely occurs by itself. It is more likely to accompany common plaque psoriasis.

Where Does Inverse Psoriasis Occur?

Inverse psoriasis appears in the body folds; the armpits, under the breast, skin folds of the groin, buttocks, and genitals.

When inverse psoriasis is located in the groin area, it can be very uncomfortable and embarrassing. Too much scratching can worsen it and cause extreme inflammation. Scratching, friction and sweating, harsh soaps and skin care products, and stress of all sorts can result in a worsening of the symptoms of inverse psoriasis. The affected areas are susceptible to fungal infections.

Inverse psoriasis may be the result of a yeast overgrowth, as well as high sensitivity to friction and/or sweating. The skin lesions are further intensified by the sweat and skin rubbing together in the skin folds.

In addition, people who are overweight or have more folds of skin are most likely to get Inverse Psoriasis. Inverse Psoriasis which usually occurs in about 2% to 6% of those with psoriasis. Steroid creams and ointments are often used, and can be fairly reliable. Steroidal treatments, such as hydrocortisone, can cause skin thinning and other side effects. Due to the side effects of steroid treatment, the use of topical steroids must be kept to a minimum.

Additional difficulties arise with treating inverse psoriasis due to the locations of the lesions being prone to fungal and yeast infections. Due to this problem, doctors may dilute the treatments by including antifungal or anti-yeast agents. Perspiration and friction, difficult to avoid in the creases of the skin, only make the condition worse.
